A long-anticipated visit to a health facility in southern Germany, where I’m focusing on improving my weight, mobility, and overall health, has brought an unexpected creative opportunity: the chance to meet fascinating people and tell their stories through photography.
Engaging conversations about eating habits, fitness struggles, and shared challenges have helped me connect with my fellow patients. Though our individual journeys differ, there’s a collective understanding—we’ve all taken a step toward positive change.
Most patients stay here for three to four weeks, while my stay is five. This unique environment feels somewhat detached from the “outside world.” We’re far from home, work, loved ones, and our usual routines. This separation offers a chance for introspection—and, for me, a new lens through which to view life.
Knowing I’d have free time in the evenings and on weekends, I brought my camera and gear, intending to explore nearby hiking trails, historic landmarks, and charming cities. While I’ve gone on a few hikes, I quickly realized carrying heavy equipment wasn’t ideal—sweating buckets was challenge enough!
But I discovered a different creative outlet: photographing the people I’ve gotten to know here. As connections deepened, it became easier to ask if I could capture their portraits. It’s amazing how much a simple photo can reveal about resilience, vulnerability, and strength.
Below, you’ll find a few examples of these moments I’ve captured. I plan to add more over time, so be sure to check back. I’d love to hear your thoughts—drop a comment and let me know what you think about this journey and the photos.
Georgous! Really great pictures. My Favorites: The last one of Eunice and smiling Rene.
